Know Your Medicare Options

Medicare beneficiaries have more options for coverage than ever before. As part of the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act seniors can choose between two types of Medicare

Traditional Medicare

This type of Medicare goes all the way back to 1965, the beginning of the program. Here Medicare generally pays 80% of medical expenses and is your primary insurance. Most beneficiaries will fill in the other 20% with plans called Medicare Supplements. Supplement plans in Wisconsin have mandated benefits making them virtually identical no matter what insurance company you choose. Prices vary according to age, health, sex, zip codes and smoking preference. Traditional Medicare Supplements cannot include Drug Prescription benefits better known as Medicare Part D.

Medicare Advantage

This type of Medicare goes back only to the 80s in Wisconsin but has become a very popular choice since 1996. Instead of Medicare paying 80% of medical expenses the federal government pays a private insurance company to do its job for it. This is like the government jobbing out Medicare to the private sector. Plans are required to at least pay benefits consistent with what Traditional Medicare would pay. Members have co-pays for health care but have little or no premiums to pay. Think of this type of coverage as pay as you go Medicare. Advantage plans can include Part D drug benefits in their coverage and allow members to switch plans and or companies every year during enrollment periods spanning from November 15th to March 30th of each year.
